Computation of a precise gravimetric geoid model with sparse and limited data is a difficult task, which needs a special notice. This book investigates the procedure for gathering, evaluating and combining different data for the determination of an optimum gravimetric geoid model as a case study in Iran. It covers the theoretical and practical aspects of geoid modelling and its applications in geosciences and engineering. It is intended to serve as a text book for graduate students in geosciences such as geodesy, geophysics and surveying engineering. It is consists of the basic theories and materials which need for precise geoid modelling including theory of the Least-Squares Modification of Stokes?s formula (KTH approach), qualification and refinement of the gravity data,determination of the gravity and gradient components, Global Geopotential Models (GGM),Digital Elevation Models (DEM), lateral density variation, corrective surface and engineering height datum, quasi-geoid modeling, variance components analysis, geodynamical and geophysical interpretations of geoid models.
Practical Concepts in Geoid Modelling with Geophysical and Geodynamical Interpretations Ramin Kiamehr Books
I was anxious to receive this text as I have an interest in the subject. The author received his PhD from a high quality program under the supervision of one of the top persons in the field.Unfortunately, the book is replete with typesetting errors. Starting at page 9, we see little boxes instead of the appropriate symbols, mathematical operators or text. This problem continues throughout the text. While much of the missing text is easy to guess, the equations are less so.
While perhaps something can be learned from the non-defective portion, I am not interested in guessing the missing values/words. As there are a number of new (at least to me) approaches to correcting and modifying existing formulas, they cannot be cross-checked against other standard approaches.
This is shocking. As this is a paperback numbering only 203 pages and selling for $105 US you would think they could do a better job.
Other problems include the use of a very small font, the use of gray scale for all images (also too small), and the absence of an index. Changing the book's form factor from 15 by 22 cm to something larger would enhance readability and allow use of larger images (now typically 6 by 8 cm). As currently presented, the images hardly serve their intended purpose. I imagine implementing these changes would make the text even more expensive.
Reading through the text I found that it was quite readable, a concern given that the author is a non-native English speaker. There are clear discussions of many of the data sources, their characteristics as well as the main topic: the modeling of the geoid.
I do think I have seen any other texts published by Lambert Academic Publishing but I would be wary of their products given this volume.
<update> After returning the book I note that a "newest printing" tag has been added to the book's page on Amazon. The price has also been lowered by about $20. I tried to get an answer from Amazon about whether the problems with the typesetting are now resolved. The helpful person answering my query about issues with the book return could not answer this secondary question. His recommendation was to buy the book again and return it if the problem remains.
<UPDATE to update>
I just received my "newest printing" copy. Scanning through it I can see that the printing errors have been eliminated as far a I can tell at this point. While not a subject matter expert, I find the text very straightforwardly written and, given the topic, easy to follow. There is a great deal of useful information in this text. Much of it is new to me. I am trying to educate myself on this subject and find it quite suitable.
