THE DOUGLAS LEGACY
The Douglas sisters, beauties all, are valuable pawns in their family’s bitter struggle to control the Scottish Crown. But when powerful enemies threaten, each Douglas lass will find she must face them alone.

CAPTURED BY A LAIRD
Haunted by his father’s violent death, David Hume, the new laird of Wedderburn, sets out to make his name so feared that no one will dare harm his family again. The treacherous ally who played on his father’s weakness is dead and beyond David's vengeance, but his castle and young widow are ripe for the taking. The moment David lays eyes on the dark-haired beauty defending her wee daughters, however, he knows this frail-looking lass is the one person who could bring him to his knees.

Wed at thirteen to a man who tried daily to break her spirit, Lady Alison Douglas is looking forward to a long widowhood. But when the fearsome warrior known as the Beast of Wedderburn storms her gates, she finds herself, once again, forced to wed a stranger. Alison is only a pawn to serve his vengeance, so why does this dark warrior arouse such fiery passion and an unwelcome longing in her heart?

With death and danger looming, these two wounded souls must learn to trust each other…for only love can save them.

At first I thought I would love this book. It seemed to have such promise. I liked the fact that the heroine's brother, Archibald Douglas, is based on a real person. I thought the author was going to give us rich and interesting characters. As it turns out the only really positive thing I can say about the heroine is that she is beautiful, romance-novel beautiful. She has rich, flowing black hair; soft, white, flawless skin; and violet-colored eyes. Pretty standard romance novel fare. I have read this description of ideal beauty many times before but you know what, I have never actually in real life seen anyone with purple eyes.

Other than the superficial, our heroine is really rather ugly to me. She starts out emotionally beaten down after a 10-year marriage to a very verbally abusive husband who enjoyed humiliating her at every turn. She married at only 13-years-old so she essentially grew-up in this horrible environment. At first I was rooting for her to find herself and become the strong woman she always wanted to be. It turns out she just became a shrew rather than a strong woman. Instead of working to earn David's trust she tries to manipulate him into sharing his thoughts and plans with her by withholding sex. As far as I could tell she did not really do anything to gain the trust she wanted except complain, pout, and make ridiculous decisions. He asked her to stay in the castle and keep herself and her daughters safe when he had to go away. But no, instead she is easily tricked into leaving thereby putting everyone in danger. She could not seem to understand why he was so upset. I was annoyed with her too.

She was clearly not a good match for David. Rather than support him emotionally as he worked to keep them all safe, she undermined him with her nagging. She seemed to have 21st century sensibilities and complained about any violence. I got tired for her haranguing him about his decisions.

There is a scene with David's brother, Robbie, that I think sums up my problems with Alison perfectly. She and David have just had a fight after she finds out that he beheaded one of their enemies. She yells at him that he should have shown restraint and they part, angry with each other. She then sees Robbie and asks Robbie why he is upset too.

"Ye want to know?" Robbie said, turning fierce green eyes on her that were so like David's. "Truly?"
"I do."
"Nay, ye don't," he said. "You want to believe what you want to believe."

He goes on to tell her how David beheaded the enemy to save their youngest brother. She is shocked although why I am still not sure.

"Why did David not tell me?" she asked.
"Loyalty is everything to him," Robbie said. "He expected ye to trust him, to believe in him, without requiring an explanation."

That scene sums it up for me. She is a judgmental, unsupportive, nagging shrew and I wanted more for a Highland Laird than that.

This book overall had a decent if unoriginal plot but for me the negatives outweighed the positives.

CAPTURED BY A LAIRD THE DOUGLAS LEGACY Book 1 edition by Margaret Mallory Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I received this book free from one of the book sites. I do not remember which one! This is my honest review.
Wow, talk about seduction! Yup I would say about 85% of this book is about sexual tension and desire. There is history here, but most of it is in the background. There is betrayal and fighting, life in Scotland was not easy. Men fought for what they wanted & for justice.
Allison was, like most ladies of the time, considered as a pawn. She was used to make an alliance & would be considered fair game once she was widowed. I believe her story was not unusual for ladies of the time, although I do believe that the dramatic behavior of her first husband was.
Recommended for those who enjoy seductive books.
I read a LOT and I have to say this was one of the best books I've read in a long time. Not once did I skip pages or skim through any paragraphs. The author stayed true to the characters when they evolved from their abusive and lonely pasts to finally trust and love each other. There were a lot of tense, emotional and angry situations but I never had to second-guess what was going on, the storyline was clear and moved along without leaving important details out. I never had to backtrack to see what I had missed. I did wonder what happened to David's ex-mistress after Alison arrived at Hume castle but really, the storyline was in full force at that point and adding her in would have made unnecessary drama the story didn't need. I also liked the fact it was based on real historical events and people.
Captured By A Laird (The Douglas Legacy) by Margaret Mallory

One of my very favourite authors is the late, great Kathleen Woodiwiss. She wove an excellent story, full of vengeance, cunning, revenge, lust and love. This book reminds me greatly of her story The Wolf and the Dove. Although it was written in 1974, there seems to be something about feuding Lords and ladies of the castles that keeps making this an interesting plot line.
Alison is not your typical heroine. She has been widowed by a repugnant man that she despised. She despised him so much that she took his bed into the yard and burned it. The only shining light in her life is her two beautiful daughters. She hasn’t had an easy life, being married at 13 to a brute who humiliated her daily and make her life hell. Once she is free of him she thinks that she has the freedom she has longed for. With political men surrounding her life, she is remarkably naïve in this hope.
Her knight in shining armour is the ‘Beast’, David Wedderburn. He takes her castle and forces her to marry him. The author is descriptive in the cattle raiding and fear mongering he unleashes on the border lands, but it doesn’t distract that David is actually a very good person. He wants vengeance for his father and uncle’s murders and the injustices done to his clan, but he shows leniency and mercy to his enemies.
He is startled when he meets Alison. The plan was always to marry her, but he is blown away by her beauty and grace. He thanks his lucky stars, but quickly learns that he will have to woo his new bride. She desperately wants to be the kind of wife that a husband turns to in confidence, but with her brothers and Clan Douglas blowing in the wind, he doesn’t take her interest seriously. The story revolved a lot around the two of them getting to know one another.
The daughters and David’s brothers play a large part in the story. They make the new family unit more complete. The challenges of David’s brothers are borne by Alison and in turn he takes his role as step father to heart. Alison’s mother gave her a black stone to guard herself with. I love how the author wove in the mysticism of Scottish culture into the story. It’s such a beautiful part of the culture and the stone definitely served its purpose.
As Alison is a widow and has borne children, she clearly knows what happens in the marital bed and is revolted by the thought of returning to it. David must woo her gently. He awakens lust in her and for the first time she feels pleasure. She understands how great it can be between a man and a woman. David is a patient and gentle lover. The love scenes are so well written and you actually felt Alison’s joy at this surprising revelation and happiness in her new union.
But the enemies at the gate don’t stay there for long. There is a lot of plotting and evil lurking and swirling around the new family at Blackadder. Alison and David’s newfound peace is tested again and again. The new lovers are still carrying deep scars and they drive them apart. Only when the ultimate sacrifice must be made, do the two of them work together to thwart their enemies.
The ending was so great! When I look at the models on the cover of the book, I truly imagine that this is what their life will be like. I loved the epilogue that shares a glimpse into the future. Clan life is everything in Scottish culture and reading this story made me wish I was part of one too.

I loved the story itself but a little to "racy" for me. I wish there were more stories like this but with less explicit sex scenes!!
